Aim of the Dialysis Assistant Course

To provide a course whereby dialysis assistants develop skills, knowledge and attitude which makes them part of a safe, effective and caring team.

Duration
The period of training is 3 months.
|
|
Venue
The training is conducted on a full-time basis at the National Kidney Foundation Training Centre, 3 Two Square.
|

Entry Requirements
- 11 years of schooling and minimum of 6 months working experience in a haemodialysis unit.
- Must have full secondment and a form of endorsement from their organizations.
- Final selection depends on relevant merits and abilities, as evaluated by Training Committee.
- Hepatitis Status – must be negative

- Anatomy and physiology of the kidney
- Principles of Dialysis
- Haemodialysis procedure and nursing care
- Infection Control
- Dietary Aspects on Chronic Haemodialysis
- Rehabilitative Aspects of Chronic Haemodialysis

The course has been successfully run over 6 years, beginning August 2003 and 11 groups comprising 223 dialysis assistants have been trained at the end of August 2009. The course has achieved a 100 pass rate and all those who completed the course received a Certificate of Clinical Competence.

Activity Highlights
- As part of their training the dialysis assistants visit the Municipal Water Treatment Plant in Batang Berjuntai, Selangor to get an in-depth view of water treatment as lectures emphasise the importance of water treatment in haemodialysis treatment.
- Lectures are given by Consultant Nephrologist on psychological aspects of haemodialysis treatment.

Target Audience
Those currently working as Dialysis Assistants and those with 6 months renal experience, also working as DA’s or its equivalent.
