The Spirit of Care & Love

Date 2 Nov 2006
Venue Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa

Some 1,300 guests got up close and personal with the Fab Four at the charity dinner held in aid of NKF. In his warm welcome address, the Sunway Group Founder and Chairman, YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah shared about the various community service project carried out by the conglomerate, particularly in Bandar Sunway. Guest of honour, YB Dato’ Sri Dr Lim Keng Yaik, Minister of Energy, Water and Communications, called on all major corporations and enterprises to place a equal importance on corporate social reporting as on their profits.

Dato’ Sri Dr Lim then witnessed the mock cheque presentation by Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah to Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Abu Bakar bin Suleiman, President of the NKF Board of Governors. This was followed by a sumptuous Chinese dinner. Dato’ Sri Dr Lim Keng Yaik later obliged the guests by serenading 2 songs, the Beatles’ classic Yesterday and Words by The Bee Gees. His efforts raised close to RM40,0000.

Anticipation mounted as the time came for the Mersey Beatles to take the stage. Die-hard fans of the band let their hair down in this stroll down memory lane as they sang, danced and bobbed their heads to famous tunes such as I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Get Back, Can’t Buy Me Love and Ticket To Ride. The band evoked a sense of nostalgia throughout the performance, with the crowd eating out of their hands and demanding more right up to their encore performance of Twist and Shout and Hey Jude.

The look of content and joy was evident on the faces of the generous and compassionate guests who turned up in full force in support of NKF’s life-saving mission. On 30 Nov 2006, the final mock cheque presentation was held at the Sunway Group office, for the actual amount raised. Our deepest appreciation to the Sunway Group in selecting NKF to partner with this year. We look forward to many more opportunities to serve the less fortunate and underprivileged in the community.

‘Scrub That Mud Away’ Car Wash Project

Organiser: Leo Club of SMK Batu 8, Jalan Puchong

Date 8 Nov 2006
Venue SMK Batu Lapan, Jalan Puchong

This was the third consecutive year this Leo Club had organised a car wash, and this time, they selected NKF as the beneficiary. Even though some teachers were dubious about the Leos touching the brand new cars, most gave their full support in the name of charity. Furthermore the price of RM5 per car for wash and vacuum was a steal.

35 Leos from the morning and afternoon sessions volunteered their services to help in the project. The day began bright and sunny but rain poured down at noon, leaving the Leos with no option but to wait the rain out by having lunch. Even though the question of postponing the car wash arose, the volunteers kept their cool, which paid off when the skies cleared at 3.30pm. The task was completed with all the cars scrubbed clean before the final evening bell rang.

In the end, the Leo spirit and unity grew stronger to achieve their goals in community service. Syabas!

NKF/BBM Reachout – Youth For Charity

In partnership with The Boy’s Brigade in Malaysia

REACHOUT - Youth For Charity was an initiative by the Boys' Brigade in Malaysia (BBM), in association with Rakan Muda of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, to encourage young people and youth organisations to be involved in social and charitable work by exposing them to the hardships of people less fortunate than them. In 2005, more than 6,000 BBM members throughout Malaysia were mobilised in a concerted effort to raise funds to be channeled towards NKF to fund its subsidised diaysis treatment programme and towards BBM for its youth training and development.

The project officially kicked off on 11 May 2005 with a car wash and opening ceremony graced by Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Datuk Azalina Othman Said. The Tee-Off For Charity golf tournament was held at the Kajang Hill Golf Club on 29 Sept 2005.

This year-long project rounded up with roadshows by different BBM companies at various locations throughout the country in Nov and Dec. With most shopping complexes experiencing increased traffic during the school holidays, it was an excellent opportunity to introduce the activities of BBM and simultaneously create awareness about kidney failure. The boys and girls of BBM were also given the task of raising funds via donation box collections.

An advertorial on NKF and BBM as well as a donation form appeared in the Dec issue of the MPH Quill newsletter circulated to some 6,000 members and the MPH Christmas catalogue.

The closing ceremony was held on 7 Apr 2006 at the NKF Head Office. A Boys’ Brigade guard-of-honour and brass band greeted the guest of honour, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports YB Datuk Liow Tiong Lai upon his arrival. He was on hand to witness the project mock cheque presentation for the total sum raised of RM280,000, which will be split equally between NKF and the BBM.

Keep up the good work for the Malaysian youth, BBM! The Boys’ Brigade Malaysia can be reached at 03-7784 4426.
