ment of the setting of a new dialysis centre between JUITA and NKF, in Tangkak, Johor next year. As President of JUITA, Prof. Dr Jamilah, a sociologist by profession, pledged RM50,000 to kick-off the project and spoke on the many benefits to the rural areas where dialysis patients needed dialysis and had to travel long distances to Malacca and Muar to seek dialysis.
Prof. Jamilah said NKF and JUITA would work together to identify a suitable site which would adhere to the current Private Healthcare Act and be convenient in terms of transport for those living in the outlying areas of Tangkak.
The announcement was made at a press conference following the official opening of the Forum themed, ‘Improving Quality of Life’ with Goh Seng Chuan, CEO, NKF, Dr N. Ganesan, Chairman of the Patient Selection and Welfare Committee, NKF, Dr Sivashanker, Medical Programme Manager, Maniam Raman Chettiar, Senior Welfare Officer and a former Assistant Director, Department of Social Welfare Malaysia.
At the press conference, Prof Dr Jamilah highlighted the importance of lifestyle and dietary changes for those currently facing chronic illness such as End Stage Renal Failure or ESRD.
She also suggested government departments should serve food which contained fruits and more vegetables such as salads for the many functions which were held daily. However, she added that educating Malaysians was important and she congratulated the National Kidney Foundation for the timely Forum.
As a foundation with more than 19 dialysis centres nationwide, NKF was an experienced partner and she looked forward to working with them. JUITA would work hard to raise the remaining amount needed for the new dialysis centre, which she hoped would materialise next year.
