DIALYSIS CENTRES

-
With 21 centres located nationwide and more than 1040 dialysis patients to manage, the Dialysis Manager of the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia, Tan Chor Seong and Haji Khalik Untong ensures the smooth management of the dialysis centres through regular maintenance of dialysis machines and visits to the centres.

As centre manager of the dialysis centres has a nursing sister or staff nurse in charge, they report to dialysis manager on the administrative running of the centres, such as breakdown of machines and adequate staffing levels to meet the needs of patients.

With the recent Healthcare Act 2006 and the various licensing provisions, submission of these and other related matters have to be complied with to the Ministry of Health. To maintain the high standards in dialysis care, NKF has to constantly ensure the high quality of reverse osmosis water used in the dialysis process is maintained and monitored regularly.

With 321 machines located at the various centres, they have to be well-maintained and for those which reach the end of their life-cycle, replaced with new ones. To ensure regular updating of information for the benefit of medical assistants, staff nurses and dialysis assistants, the Dialysis Manager plays an active role in organizing together with Welfare and Public Education, the Patients Forum and Annual Dialysis Meeting.

OPENING OF 21st NKF DIALYSIS CENTRE, KUANTAN

-
The National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF), in its efforts to help poor dialysis patients, opened its 21st dialysis centre, Pusat Dialisis Tun Abdul Razak-NKF Kuantan, in Kuantan, Pahang on 20th August 2008. The dialysis centre to be officially opened by Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Hajjah Rahah bte Tan Sri Mohd Noah, the wife of the 2nd Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdul Razak bin Haji Dato’ Hussein Al-Haj, is the first NKF dialysis centre in the state of Pahang.

Indeed, this is another milestone for NKF, said Dato Dr Zaki Morad bin Mohd Zaher, Vice-Chairman, NKF and he thanked the committee members of ‘Light Up Your Life, Kamahl Charity Concert’ under the able Chairmanship of Dato Dr George Ananda, who through their efforts and hard work raised the necessary funds to make the project a reality. “The National Kidney Foundation is fortunate to have such caring organisations support our efforts to provide affordable dialysis for those poor and needy patients in less economically developed states such as Pahang,” said Dato Zaki.

Today the most economically developed west coast states of Peninsular Malaysia registered the highest provision of new dialysis treatment, at more than 100 per million per state population since 2000, while the 3 economically least developed states of Malaysia, Pahang, Kelantan and Sabah have the lowest dialysis provision at 32 to 50 million state population. Thus, the geographic inequity in dialysis provision needs to be addressed by planning more dialysis centres offering affordable dialysis treatment in states such as Sarawak and Pahang.

-
It was indeed a day of festivity at the official opening ceremony of Fo Yi-NKF Dialysis Centre (Unit 2) at 29, Jalan Hamilton, Penang, on 20th April 2007. The event was even more memorable for the dialysis patients and members of the public as YB Datuk Lee Kah Choon, Parliamentary Health Secretary represented YB Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Khoon, Chief Minister of Penang in officiating the opening ceremony.

In his speech, YB Datuk Lee Kah Choon addressed the large crowd and thanked the Fo Yi Committeefor so promptly responding to the needs of the community and he pointed out that the officialopening also coincided with the 10th Anniversary of the founding of Penang Fo Yi HaemodialysisSociety. The government was also working hard to improve the lives of dialysis patients by encouraging organ donations, not only of the kidneys but all parts of the body.

In 1st July 2002, the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia, as a leading NGO with its vast expertise and experience in the management of dialysis centres was invited to professionally manage the daily operations of the centre. OPENING UP NEW DIALYSIS CENTRES

In view of NKF’s vast experience in the area of dialysis management, there has been tremendous interest by various organisations to partner NKF in the setting up of dialysis centres.

The Senior Project Manager, Mr. Na Lai Chun will undertakes the development and re-development of NKF’s dialysis centres in Malaysia as well as conducting feasibility studies for those interested in setting up new centres.

The newly developed centres for 2006 include Che Luan Khor – NKF Dialysis Centre in Kluang, Apex - NKF Dialysis Centre in Klang and Pusat Dialisis Amal – NKF in Kota Bahru.

It is estimated the cost of setting up new dialysis centre could reach up to RM 800,000. In view of this, NKF has worked towards developing and setting new centres in partnership with other organizations.

One of the initiatives in setting up new dialysis centres is to focus on rural areas, where the poor patients with kidney failure have access to dialysis and not resorting to traditional treatment as a cure for end stage renal failure. This also ensures even distribution of dialysis centres both in towns and rural areas.
